The NYPD is hiring for a variety of careers, from Police Officer to Police Communications Technician. Join their team of highly-trained first responders and administrative staff and answer the call to provide the best law enforcement to the residents, employees and visitors of New York City. The deadline to apply for the Police Officer exam is May 20, 2025.

Requirements for NYPD Police Officer candidates:

By the date of appointment, you must have:

  1. Successfully completed 24 college semester credits at an accredited college or university with at least a 2.0 cumulative index or its equivalent, OR
  2. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and have completed two years of honorable full-time U.S. military service.
  3. Age Requirement: You must be at least 17 years of age by the date you take the multiple-choice test to be permitted to take this examination. You must have attained age 21 to be appointed as a Police Officer and younger than 35 years (some exceptions apply for those with military service)
  4. Proof of good character and satisfactory background
  5. Possess a valid and unrestricted New York State Motor Vehicle Driver License
  6. Undergo a Medical and Psychological Assessment
  7. Pass a Physical Test
  8. Pass a Drug Test
  9. Residency Requirement: Be a resident of the City of New York or of Nassau, Westchester, Suffolk, Orange, Rockland, or Putnam counties
  10. Citizenship Requirement: United States citizenship is required at the time of appointment as a Police Officer.
  11. English Requirement: You must be able to understand and be understood in English.
  12. Provide valid Proof of Identity

If you choose to pay the application fee with a credit/debit/gift card, you will be charged a service fee of 2.00% of the payment amount. This service fee is nonrefundable.

CANDIDATES WHO DEMONSTRATE THAT THEY ARE A VETERAN, UNEMPLOYED, RECEIVING PUBLIC ASSISTANCE, OR SUPPLEMENTARY SECURITY INCOME, ARE ENTITLED TO A WAIVER OF THE APPLICATION FEE.
