ELIGIBILITY
1. What are the scholarship eligibility criteria?
To be considered for the NYCHA-CUNY Resident Scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Authorized NYCHA residency
- Full-time currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate student at any CUNY college
- Minimum 24 credits at the time of application
- Minimum 3.0 GPA
The following students are not eligible:
- College students in non-degree earning/certificate programs
- Graduating high school seniors
- College freshman/first year students with fewer than 24 credits at time of application
- Graduating college seniors with no additional credits/classes to take beyond the upcoming Summer towards attainment of an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree.
2. Can past scholarship recipients re-apply?
Yes. Past scholarship recipients can re-apply.
3. Am I eligible to apply if I live in a NYCHA development, but my name is not on the lease?
No. To be eligible for consideration of the scholarship, all applicants must be authorized NYCHA residents, who are listed as part of the family composition. Authorized residency will be verified by NYCHA.
4. How can I tell if I live in a NYCHA development?
You can search for your address using the NYCHA Development Interactive Map. Buildings on the map that appear in pink and are outlined in pink are NYCHA developments/buildings.
5. Are part-time students eligible to apply?
Part-time students with documented disabilities are eligible to apply for the Regina A. Figueroa Memorial Scholarship.
6. Are NYCHA employees eligible to apply?
Yes. NYCHA employees, who are also authorized NYCHA residents are eligible to apply if they meet all of the criteria. Authorized residency will be verified by NYCHA.
7. Why aren’t NYCHA residents who attend state or private colleges eligible to apply?
At this time, NYCHA has a partnership with The City University of New York only, to fund scholarships for NYCHA residents who are enrolled full-time at CUNY colleges. In the future we may pursue partnerships with state or private entities that would allow us to expand our scholarship offerings. Visit our website for other housing related scholarships.
APPLICATION PROCESS
1. When is the application due?
Applications open April 16, 2024. All applications must be submitted online by June 25, 2024 on the NYCHA self-service portal at https://selfserve.nycha.info.
2. How can I submit my application?
Applicants should submit an online application under their own name by creating an account via the NYCHA self-service portal.
3. If I applied for the scholarship in the past do I need to resubmit all of the required documents?
Yes. Even if you applied for the scholarship in the past, you must submit current copies of the required documents.
4. How will I know when my application has been received?
All applicants will receive a confirmation email once completed applications with supporting documents have been received.
5. When will I be notified about whether I have won the scholarship?
We expect to notify all scholarship applicants, including scholarship recipients, within 4-6 weeks of application closing date.
AWARD
1. How much is the award?
The scholarship is $1,000 disbursed in two parts.
2. How many scholarships will be awarded?
For 2024, we will be awarding in multiple categories. The total number of scholarships awarded varies annually based on available funding.
3. Is the scholarship renewable?
No. All applicants are encouraged to re-apply annually.
4. Can I use this scholarship to pay for graduate school?
Yes.
