Summary
East Side House (ESH), founded in 1891, is a 501(c) (3) organization that has served the South Bronx since 1963. The organization is dedicated to the community and focused on providing resources and opportunities. East Side House has identified that education is the foundation for economic improvement. Our youth education and technology programs teach skills to allow students and clients to become more self-sufficient and independent. As a community resource, the organization also provides services to families and a growing senior population. In 2020 the organization began food distribution as an additional way to provide economic support to the community we serve.
Jobs-Plus is a proven, place-based employment program designed to increase the earnings and employment of working-age residents in designated public housing developments or a cluster of developments. Jobs-Plus – Mill Brook Houses, is operated by East Side House Settlement and based in the Mott Haven neighborhood of the South Bronx. It offers workforce development, financial empowerment services and community building programming to over 3000 residents. With a recent 3-year contract renewal, Jobs-Plus is looking to expand on the services provided to residents since 2013. This expansion will include heightened focus on training and education as well as career advancement services.
The GED Instructor will work under the supervision of the Education Specialist and Assistant Director to organize, schedule, and instruct in Adult Basic Skills including GED/ HSD preparation. The instructor is responsible for the planning and delivery of quality instruction, assessment, and student progress in GED courses. These courses are designed to be responsive to the needs and expectations of the diverse community and participants we serve. Our goal is to apply the primary-person approach in helping participants plan for their career and learning goals. Responsibilities include teaching, developing, and implementing digital curriculums, conducting intake, and administering tests. These services will complement and directly feed into workforce development and career advancement services provided throughout the organization.

Primary Functions
Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Integrate GED services into broader career and educational goals of members.
- Implement and expand on GED material for pre-GED and GED prep, incorporating students’ relevant interests and learning needs.
- Provide high-quality instruction to youth and adult literacy education program participants employing research-based instructional strategies and best practices including differentiated instruction
- Conduct career plans/needs assessment analysis for each participant; Provide student feedback and support; devise individualized instructional plans for students. Continually communicate with students on instructional expectations and keep them informed of their progress in meeting those expectations.
- Prescribes from individual employability plans and contributes to monthly evaluations of progress in program, makes recommendations and/or adaptation for program adjustment.
- Initiate and participate in case conferencing management to assist members achieve career and education goals.
- Assess the accomplishments of students on a regular basis; Maintain records portfolios and student progress reports
- Work as part of an interdisciplinary team with other Jobs Plus and ESH Workforce Development staff, including Post-Secondary Pathways to provide services and to promote the most effective instructional program goals
- Be willing to become licensed in area of certification as required by program and lead trainings to certify participants.
- Attend required professional training, cross-departmental meetings, case conferences, workshops and events.Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Education & Experience Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree required
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work with a culturally diverse population
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, presentation, and leadership skills. Demonstrated initiative, creativity, flexibility, and follow-through
- Excellent analytical skills
- Strong computer skills and technological experience including Microsoft Office (Word, Teams, etc.) Google Suite (Google Classroom, Docs, and Sheets) and similar programs
Expected Work Schedule
This role is a full-time position 35 hours a week. The program operates Monday – Friday, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM with one Saturday a month flexibility. Workdays/hours subject to change based on ESH’s needs.
Required Clearances
COVID Vaccine – As a recipient of Federal, State, and local funds, all staff are expected to be fully vaccinated or able to obtain vaccination before their start date
Supervisory Responsibility: None.
Work Environment
Business casual. This job operates in a school office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
Travel
Minimal expected for this position.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. This role is generally a sedentary role; however, some sorting/filing is required. Requirements include the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool as ]necessary.
