NYCHA YouthBuild Program

NYCHA Youth Build

NYCHA YouthBuild is a new free career, learning and skills-building program for young people residing in the Brownsville neighborhood. Eligible NYCHA residents will participate in a 6-month program where they will receive leadership development, academic instruction, hands-on construction skills with certifications, and case management support.

Program Components:

The NYCHA YouthBuild Program will serve 60 NYCHA residents ages 17-24 from the Brownsville-Ocean Hill​ neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York (Brooklyn Community Board 16) who left high school prior to graduation ​and who have barriers to employment. The program will run in two six-month cohorts of 30 students. Participants will receive a stipend while in the program. ​

NYCHA’s YouthBuild Program will create pathways into union apprenticeship and entry-level construction employment and NYCHA will leverage Section 3 opportunities, its union/employer partnerships, and the NYC Workforce Development Board to connect graduates to careers.

Each cohort will include:​

  • Technical, lab and hands-on classroom construction skills and construction safety training leading to ​industry-recognized certifications and credentialing, including OSHA, Site Safety Training, and ​National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) Construction Technology Credentials; ​
  • Hands-on construction skills application through the renovation of affordable housing unit(s);​
  • HSE instruction and career readiness support to successfully pass the HSE exam and prepare for career and/or post-secondary success; ​
  • Leadership development, including community service opportunities; and​
  • 12-months of job placement, supportive services and post-program follow-up support. ​

  • Ages 17-24
  • Left High School without a diploma*
  • NYCHA resident in Brownsville and Ocean Hill neighborhoods of Brooklyn
    • NYCHA developments: Brownsville, Garvey (Group A), Glenmore Plaza, Howard, Howard Ave (PACT), Langston Hughes, Seth Low, Ralph Ave Rehabs (PACT), Sutter Avenue-Union Street (PACT), Tapscott Street Rehabs (PACT), Tilden, Van Dyke I, 104-14 Tapscott Street (PACT), Howard Avenue-Park Place (PACT), Ocean Hill Apartments, Ocean Hill- Brownsville (PACT), Saratoga Village.
    • NYCHA Section 8 residents in 11212 and 11233
  • Eligible to work in the United States
