The Center for Health Equity & Community Wellness (CHECW) seeks to eliminate racial and other inequities resulting in premature mortality. With an unwavering grounding in history and structural analysis, CHECW works to increase visibility of the harm perpetuated by centuries of racist, socially unjust policy while pushing towards redress for the most impacted NYC communities. CHECW addresses inequity across community and healthcare systems in partnership with community, faith-based, and healthcare organizations. CHECW’s work focuses on social determinants of health, including environmental and commercial determinants, and addresses both upstream and downstream factors to improve health and well-being of New Yorkers. CHECW is comprised of the Bureau of Bronx Neighborhood Health, the Bureau of Brooklyn Neighborhood Health, the Bureau of Harlem Neighborhood Health, the Bureau of Chronic Disease Prevention, the Bureau of Equitable Health Systems and the Bureau of Finance and Administrative Services. The division’s Deputy Commissioner also serves as the Agency’s Chief Equity Officer and oversees Race to Justice, the Agency’s internal reform effort to help our staff learn what they can do to be ter address racial health gaps and improve health outcomes for all New Yorkers. The Bureau of Queens Neighborhood will contribute to the larger Neighborhood Health Strategy and complement the work of the other Bureaus of Neighborhood Health in Brooklyn, Harlem, and the Bronx.

The Bureau of Queens Neighborhood health seeks to hire two Community Health Workers who wild build strengthen, and maintain partnerships in Queens, with a focus on Jamaica and the surrounding areas.

DUTIES WILL INCLUDE BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO:
– Maintain communication with local organizations and stakeholders to promote NYC Health Department programs and resources and to collect feedback on community needs
– Engage with community partners to promote health services, resources, and education.
– Develop and maintain relationships with a broad variety of community partners.
– Represent the bureau and the Jamaica Neighborhood Health Action Center at health fairs, meetings, and other external events occurring throughout the community.
– Deliver presentations and workshops to diverse audiences throughout the community.
– Maintain and report data that demonstrate community activities and results.
– Support Bureau-wide programs and initiatives.
– Participate in Just in Time training with NYC Health Department divisions that serve as a lead for a local/hyperlocal emergency response. Distribute information and coordinate information sessions to community residents and businesses in response to emergency incidents.
– Support agency efforts in building resilience in identified communities to mitigate impact from localized emergencies such as legionella outbreaks; conduct messaging, communicating and other efforts to make community aware of climate health preventive measures.

PREFERRED SKILLS:
2+ years of community work experience.
Excellent organizational skills and highly detail and maintain working relationships with culturally diverse community groups.
Knowledge of Queens local communities and local organization leadership, specifically Jamaica and surrounding areas.
Comfortable speaking in public.
Bilingual (written and spoken) Spanish, Bengali, Mandarin, or other language proficiency encourage to apply

Minimum Qualifications

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to “1” or “2” above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in “1” above.
