Test for Adult Basic Education (T.A.B.E) Session – Frequently Asked Questions
REES utilizes the TABE Level D Form 10 Survey exam for all applicants to the NYCHA Resident Training Academy (NRTA). The Survey exam includes Reading, Mathematics Computation, and Applied Mathematics.
How long is the test?
The TABE is a timed test. The length of the exam is 65 minutes. There are three sections:
- Reading – 25 minutes
- Math Computation – 15 minutes
- Applied math – 25 minutes
How can I reserve a seat for a TABE Test Session?
You can schedule an appointment by calling the REES Hotline at 718-289-8100 or you can RSVP online. Make sure to select NRTA TABE Session for the track your interested in applying.

What are the required TABE levels for specific training programs?
The required minimum TABE level for each training track:
- Janitorial (6.0 reading/math level)
- Construction (7.0 reading/math level)
Do I have to retake the TABE test if I took it before?
You may have to retake the TABE, depending on how long ago you took it. The NRTA will honor exams that have been taken within the year that you are applying.
If I pass the test, does that guarantee that I will be accepted into the training program?
No, passing the exam does not guarantee acceptance into the training program. The TABE test is the first step in the long and competitive application process. Training Partners make final determination on who is selected to participate in the training.
Do I need to bring in any documents to the TABE test session?
Please bring in valid photo identification documents to get into the building. You should bring a number two pencil and pen.
Are calculators permitted during the test?
Calculators are permitted only for one math section and will be provided.
Can I use my cell phone or other electronic devices?
The use of cell phone or other electronic devices is strictly prohibited. Anyone caught using one will be disqualified for testing.
How can I get to the NYCHA REES Office location?
NYCHA’s Office of Resident Economic Empowerment and Sustainability (REES) located at 787 Atlantic Avenue (between Vanderbilt Ave and Clermont Ave), Brooklyn, N.Y. 11238. You can take the C- train to Clinton-Washington Avenues or the 2,3,4,5 trains to Atlantic Av – Barclays Ctr.
